What is antenatal care?
Antenatal care is the care you receive from our team of specialists during the course of your pregnancy. You will be given appointments with obstetricians in order for them to check you and your baby’s health, give you all the information you need during this special time, and arrange for screening tests to ensure a healthy pregnancy and delivery. They will also be there throughout the duration of your pregnancy to help answer any questions you may have.
You will also be given antenatal classes, including workshops and workouts.

Starting antenatal care
You can begin your antenatal care as soon as you know that you’re pregnant by making an appointment with your GP.
It is best to see us as early as possible to obtain the information you need to have a healthy pregnancy from the beginning.
Let your doctor know if you have a disability or special needs that need attention for your antenatal appointments or for labor. If you don’t speak English, let your doctor know and we will make arrangements for you.

Antenatal care
During your antenatal care process, you will be given information regarding your pregnancy about topics such as nutrition, diet, and lifestyle. You will also be asked about your and your spouses medical history, as well as having pre-antenatal tests done, such as screening for sickle-cell disease and thalassemia.

Your first antenatal visit should happen when you are 8-12 weeks pregnant. It will take place at the clinic. You will be given information about:

  • How your baby develops during pregnancy
  • Diet and nutrition
  • Exercise
  • Screening tests
  • Antenatal classes
  • Planning your delivery

Your later antenatal visits should happen when you are 24 weeks pregnant, with more sessions to follow.
Your doctor will:

  • Check your urine, blood pressure and weight
  • Check your abdomen
  • Measure the baby’s growth

Your doctor will give you information about:

  • Your birth plan
  • Preparing for delivery and labor
  • How to tell when your labor begins
  • Post-delivery
  • Feeding your baby
  • Tests for your new baby
  • How to take care of yourself and your new baby

Postnatal Care
The postnatal period is the 6-weeks following birth, during which time the various changes that occurred to your body during pregnancy revert back to the normal state. This includes various physiological changes to your body. During your postnatal care:

  • You will be offered information to help you to efficiently maintain your own and your baby’s health and well-being and to identify and remedy any possible complications.
  • At the first postnatal session, you will be informed of the signs and symptoms of, and appropriate action for, any possibly life-threatening situations.
  • You will be encouraged to breastfeed your child and be given helpful and informative resources on the process.
  • At each postnatal session, the doctor will ask you about your emotional state, your support system and your daily management strategies for all day-to-day matters.
  • Your doctor will encourage you and your spouse to share information about your changes in mood, emotions and behavior that seem out of the ordinary.
  • During each session, you and your spouse will be given information regarding your baby’s general health and you will be instructed on how to correctly assess your baby’s health and identify any common health problems in babies.

Over the duration of your postnatal care, you will be encouraged to ask any questions you may have, and to contact your doctor or the hospital with any emergencies, should they occur.

What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a medical condition in which the bones become weak and brittle. This is usually a result of loss of tissue, caused by vitamin deficiencies or hormonal changes. The most common areas affected by osteoporosis are the wrists, spine and hips. Due to osteoporosis, bones can become so brittle that minor falls, coughing or bending can cause fractures.
Bone is living tissue that is constantly being broken down and replaced. Osteoporosis occurs when the creation of new bone doesn’t keep up with the removal of old bone.
Osteoporosis affects men and women of all races. But white and Asian women — especially older women who are past menopause — are at highest risk. Medications, healthy diet and weight-bearing exercise can help prevent bone loss or strengthen already weak bones.
Osteoporosis screening is performed in our Rheumatology and Osteoporosis Clinic. We advise all women over 50 years old to undergo the screening, as well as younger women who have indications or medical history. The screening is done at the hospital using bone densitometry, also called dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry or DEXA, to measure bone density. What are the symptoms of osteoporosis? While it is difficult to catch osteoporosis in the initial stages because of the lack of symptoms of bone loss, once your bones become weakened, the symptoms include:
• Fractures triggered more easily than normal
• Bent posture
• Loss of height
• Back pain due to a fractured vertebraCauses

The human body develops bone mass over the years and peaks by the early 20s. You are more likely to contract osteoporosis if you have developed less bone mass at a younger age. The higher your bone mass is, the less likely you are to develop osteoporosis.
You are also more likely to develop osteoporosis based on your lifestyle choices such as excessive alcohol consumption, tobacco use and living a sedentary lifestyle. Other factors are your medical conditions, race, age and sex, as women are more likely to be diagnosed with osteoporosis.
Additional factors to consider are hormone levels, dietary factors, steroids and other medications, and certain medical conditions such as cancer, lupus or rheumatoid arthritis.

Pain management, or pain medicine, is a branch of medicine that uses an interdisciplinary approach to ease your suffering from pain. Pain affects almost all your body systems. It often goes away once the underlying trauma or pathology has healed.

At Danat Al Emarat, our multi-disciplinary team uses a number of techniques to diagnose and treat pain disorders. To evaluate your pain, we will look into your personal and family medical history, assess your lifestyle, review prior tests and perform a physical examination.

Pain is usually treated with drugs. However for long-term pain, we recommend the coordinated efforts of the multidisciplinary team and specialised pain clinic.

Anesthesia
If you are undergoing surgery, our team of anaesthetists offers safe, proven and effective acute pain management to eliminate and reduce pain. The process will be explained to you in the preoperative anesthesia clinic, where you can also discuss ways and methods of intra and postoperative pain management.

Epidural Anesthesia
Our team provides a 24/7 epidural service for labour analgesia. We only use the latest evidence-based medical practices and recommendations. We conduct daily ward rounds to review patients and analgesic regimes.
