Neonatology is a specialised branch of Pediatric Medicine. It deals with every aspect of care for newborns up to 28 days of age. In practice, the term of care may be extended to the first two to three months, depending on the newborns’ health.
There are four levels of care within this branch of pediatrics. At Danat Al Emarat, we provide services up to level 3, including pediatric surgery for newborns.
a. Level 1
Routine newborn care.
b. Level 2
Intermediate care, including short-term intensive care usually lasting less than 48 hours.
c. Level 3
Short and prolonged intensive care, including care of pre-term babies.
d. Level 4
Only available at hospitals with additional subspecialist care. For example, pediatric surgery, ENT, Neurology and Endocrinology.
We want to safeguard your baby’s health and happiness when he/she comes into the world.
That’s why we follow a procedure after birth – a pediatrician will conduct a routine check-up to make sure there are no obvious concerns with your baby’s health.
They will also supervise the administration of immunizations and request for screening tests, including blood tests, hearing test and screening for congenital heart disease.
In addition, you, the parents, will be supported by our qualified nurse midwives and lactation consultants, who will help you learn about nutrition and breast-feeding for your little one.
If a baby is born too early or has fallen ill soon after birth, our caring Neonatologists will pay special attention. The baby will first be examined with their mother, and then followed up with in outpatient clinics. Others may be admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit.
If your baby is admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit, they may need support with breathing and nutrition or with specialized equipment like function monitoring machines and body cooling equipment.
